    But that's ok. I think it's like homosexuals reclaiming the word "queer." We introverted, science fiction loving, computer pwning, math living-breathing-sleeping, even pocket-protector-wearing intellectual types deserve words of our own, by gum! I think geek, nerd, and dork are fine monikers.

        And not to be too dorky, but actually when something is cited as a "folk etymology," that generally means that it's not the actual etym, but rather a sometimes charming notion perpetuated over the years because it sounds good. Like the canard that "fuck" stands for "for unlawful carnal knowledge," and that sort of thing. So, cute but unsubstatiated. I don't have my OED to hand, and am too much of a cheap-ass sexy dork to pay for the online updates, but I reckon they would have any cites if there was more than a folk etymology link twixt the two. Anyone got theirs handy? Or will I have to reemmber to check after I get home from my kink-e-zine meeting tonight (now there's sexy dorkdom . . . volunterring in my spare time to write & edit articles about BDSM. This month I'm doing a piece on kinky vegans. Does it get any dorkier?)

      i belive they made references to it in a simpsons cartoon once. that's where i learned. oh and geek well...my families a bunch of oakies so we know all about geeks. yeah. that's where i came across it at least
